Data assimilation in a marine ecosystem model of the Ligurian Sea. ArchiMer
Magri Hoeltzener, Stephanie; Brasseur, Pierre; Lacroix, Geneviève.
The objective is to explore the potentialities of sequential statistical estimation methods to assimilate observations in a primary production biological model coupled to a vertical 1D hydrodynamical model characterised by a k-l turbulent closure. The assimilation method is derived from the SEEK filter (Singular Evolutive Extended Kalman filter), which uses an error subspace represented by multivariate empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs). Real data assimilation experiments collected at sea have been realised to reconstruct the variability of the Ligurian Sea ecosystem during the FRONTAL field experiment.

Evaluation of empirical and semi-analytical chlorophyll algorithms in the Ligurian and North Tyrrhenian Seas ArchiMer
Lapucci, Chiara; Rella, Marina Ampolo; Brandini, Carlo; Ganzin, Nicolas; Gozzini, Bernardo; Maselli, Fabio; Massi, Luca; Nuccio, Caterina; Ortolani, Alberto; Trees, Charles.
The estimation of chlorophyll concentration in marine waters is fundamental for a number of scientific and practical purposes. Standard ocean color algorithms applicable to moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery, such as OC3M and MedOC3, are known to overestimate chlorophyll concentration ([CHL]) in Mediterranean oligotrophic waters. The performances of these algorithms are currently evaluated together with two relatively new algorithms, OC5 and SAM_LT, which make use of more of the spectral information of MODIS data. This evaluation exercise has been carried out using in situ data collected in the North Tyrrhenian and Ligurian Seas during three recent oceanographic campaigns. The four algorithms perform differently in Case 1 and...

First records of dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus settlement-stage larvae in the Ligurian Sea ArchiMer
Faillettaz, Robin; Gilletta, Laurent; Petit, Franck; Francour, Patrice; Irisson, Jean-olivier.
The presence of dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus settlement-stage larvae in the Ligurian Sea is reported. Epinephelus marginatus populations are slowly recovering along the french Mediterranean coast since the establishment of a moratorium on spearfishing in 1993 but still remain spatially restricted to marine protected areas. The occurrence of Epinephelus marginatus larvae in a region where effective settlement had not been detected for decades is a new observation supporting the species’ recovery.

Ligurian sea - annual variation of the sea-surface thermal structure as detected by satellite noaa-5 ArchiMer
Wald, L; Nihous, G.
Examination of one hundred thermographies of the Ligurian Sea, obtained during the years 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979 by the satellite NOAA 5, reveals the quasi-permanence, over a year, of a me an superfIcial cyclonic circulatiçm, generally characterized by its thermal pattern. The large number of satellite images and the use of specifIc methods permit the description of the an nuai variations in the structure of the horizontal thermal gradients. Results are in close agreement with those provided by previous authors.

Morphology, distribution and origin of recent submarine landslides of the Ligurian Margin (North-western Mediterranean): some insights into geohazard assessment ArchiMer
Migeon, Sebastien; Cattaneo, Antonio; Hassoun, Virginie; Larroque, Christophe; Corradi, Nicola; Fanucci, Francesco; Dano, Alexandre; De Lepinay, Bernard Mercier; Sage, Francoise; Gorini, Christian.
Based on new multibeam bathymetric data, seismic-reflection profiles and side-scan sonar images, a great number of submarine failures of various types and sizes was identified along the northern margin of the Ligurian Basin and characterized with 3 distinct end-members concerning their location on the margin, sedimentary processes and possible triggering mechanisms. They include superficial landslides mainly located in the vicinity of the main mountain-supplied rivers and on the inner walls of canyons (typically smaller that 10(8) m(3) in volume: Type 1), deep scars 100-500 m high along the base of the continental slope (Type 2), and large-scale scars and Mass Transport Deposits (MTDs) affecting the upper part of the slope (Type 3 failures). The MTDs are...

Seasonality of internal gravity waves kinetic energy spectra in the Ligurian Basin ArchiMer
Van Haren, Hans; Millot, Claude.
In the central Ligurian Basin, Western Mediterranean Sea, dense water formation occurs in winter so that near-surface stratification displays a marked seasonality. Consequently, kinetic energy spectra from the surface to intermediate depths are entirely different in summer and winter. In summer, the spectra show a peak near the local inertial frequency (f). The polarization of currents in the internal gravity wave frequency (sigma) band (f < sigma < N, N the buoyancy frequency) resembles internal wave theory (for N >>f). In winter, however, no significant near-inertial (or any other) spectral peak is observed and motions are not polarized at any frequencies, whatever the observation depths. With respect to the energy levels observed in summer,...

Statistical analysis of the concentrations of twelve metals in the Ligurian atmospheric aerosol ArchiMer
Migon, C; Gentili, B; Journel, B.
A correlation analysis based on the concept of singular-value decomposition of a matrix is applied here to an atmospheric aerosol data set, for twelve metals (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb and Zn),in the Ligurian Sea coastal environment. An iterative procedure allows atypical samples to be discarded, i.e. samples with characteristics significantly different to those of the whole data set. After five atypical samples have been objectively discarded, the general characteristics of the data set are better described and some features are enhanced according to a decreasing order of importance, For example, the mineral dust character of almost every metal is shown, which points out that the marine recycling component is negligible. Marine (Mg, Na)...

The potential impact of meiofauna on the recruitment of macrobenthos in a subtidal coastal benthic community of the Ligurian Sea (north-western Mediterranean): a field result OMA
Danovaro, R.; Fraschetti, S.; Belgrano, A.; Vincx, M.; Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Albertelli, G.; Fabiano, M..
The composition and dynamics of meio- and macrofauna in a subtidal location at Zoagli (Ligurian Sea, Italy) were followed for an annual cycle (from January 1991 to January 1992). Polychaete recruitment occurred during spring and late summerautumn. The increase in density of predatory nematodes (dominated by <i>Oncholaimellus, Viscosia, Mesacanthion </i>and <i>Chromaspirina</i>) and turbellarians corresponded to the collapse of macrobenthos recruits. Such alteration was probably due to predation by turbellarians and predator-nematodes during and immediately after the macrofaunal larval settlement. Differences in predator pressure were observed between spring and autumn. Conversely, no significant impact was observed on bivalves. The...

Turbiditic levee deposition in response to climate changes: The Var Sedimentary Ridge (Ligurian Sea) ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Jegou, Isabelle; Emmanuel, Laurent; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo; Savoye, Bruno.
The Var turbiditic system located in the Ligurian Sea (SE France) is an intermediate mud/sand-rich system. The particularity of the Var deep-sea fan is its single channel with abrupt bends and its asymmetric and hyper-developed levee on the right hand side: the Var Sedimentary Ridge. Long-term sediment accumulation on the Var Sedimentary Ridge makes this an ideal target for studying the link between onshore climate change and deep-sea turbidite stratigraphy. This paper focuses on the establishment of the first detailed stratigraphy of the levee, which is used to analyze the timing of overbank deposition throughout the last deglaciation. Main results indicate that high variability in turbidite frequencies and deposition rates along the Var Sedimentary Ridge...
